Winkies College

College dates back to the School's beginnings in 1382. Here 70 Scholars are housed around the mediaeval courtyard adjacent to Chapel. This is the heart of the School and its history. Admission is by scholarship examination known as Election.

Scholars are distinguished by the gowns they wear. Housemasters who recognise applicants of exceptional talent will suggest that a boy should consider sitting Election as an alternative to acceptance of a place in a Commoner boarding house.

Ian Fraser joined Winchester College in 1990 as a Biology don. Since then he has been master in charge of Swimming, an RAF officer in the CCF, and a set designer for the QEII theatre. For twelve years he was Head of the Biology department, where he looked after the medical applications and oversaw the move to biology Pre-U. He remains master in charge of the Expedition Society (taking Wykehamists to remote parts of the globe), and is a SCUBA Divemaster. He has a passion for wild places. Ian has been a tutor in Trant's and Phil's, and became Master in College in 2012. He has a degree in Biological Sciences (microbiology) from Birmingham University and a PGCE from Cambridge.
