Employment opportunities

Teacher of English

Winchester College seeks to appoint a well-qualified, able and inspiring teacher of English. The
successful candidate, who will teach throughout the school, will be enthusiastic about promoting
literacy, literature and culture, and will join a thriving 10-strong department. Recent results in Pre-U
English have been outstanding: in summer 2017, over 80% of pupils taking the course obtained
Distinction grades. In the new Cambridge 9-1 IGCSE over 50% of pupils gained grade 8 or 9, with
over 70% at grade 7 or above.

As well as academic success, the English department contributes to the rich co-curricular offering of
the school, especially through its English society and the school's magazine for the creative arts.
Teachers give talks and workshops to foster enjoyment and appreciation of literature for its own sake;
they direct and write plays for the boys, as well as organise theatre trips; they foster strong links with
the school's extensive library, as well as with partner schools in the maintained sector and institutions
such as The Globe, Jane Austen's House and Museum, and the Winchester Poetry Festival.

The College, which was founded in 1382, is a boys' boarding school of 700 pupils. We are committed
to the highest standards of academic excellence, first-class pastoral care and the maintenance of a
broad and balanced liberal education for all our pupils. Through our non-examined general cultural
studies programme (known as Division) we offer an approach to education which develops an
intelligent and critical awareness of the world, strong communication skills and a confident ability to
think independently and with originality. Our pupils enjoy living in a community in which academic
engagement is regarded as a priority; we aim to foster in them an enthusiastic appetite for university
study, an unaffected modesty of manner, a strong sense of social responsibility and a lifelong love of
learning. In addition to teaching English, applicants are likely to be required to teach Division.

This post will suit teachers of the highest calibre who will relish the challenge of working with able
and articulate pupils in a historic site of unparalleled architectural beauty in the heart of Winchester.
All our full-time teachers are expected to act as tutors in one of the boarding houses, thereby making
a significant contribution to the pastoral care of our pupils. In addition to this, the successful
applicant will be required to contribute in some capacity to our sports and co-curricular programme.

Design and Technology Department "Junior Fellow"

Winchester College is delighted to be able to offer an undergraduate "Junior Fellow" teaching placement in our Design and Technology Department.

Winchester College is a boys' boarding school of 700 pupils. It was founded in 1382, and is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious schools. It is distinctive in its combination of intellectual tone, promotion of high culture and civilised pastoral care. The school's examination results are excellent. We offer a distinctive and rigorous curriculum, which is complemented by a very wide range of sport, music, art, drama and other co-curricular activities.

The Winchester Junior Fellowship Scheme (JF) was set up in 2006 with the aim to add diversity to the teaching at Winchester College by recruiting undergraduates and graduates from a wide variety of backgrounds to fulfil short-term positions. The aim has always been to develop the next generation of teachers by giving them reduced teaching loads but at the same time allowing the experience of a full time boarding school. In the past, JFs have come from around the globe including Australia, China, USA and, of course, the UK. Although not essential, international experience is desirable, but what is most important is an awareness of wide cultural diversity.

This placement is for up to two terms, 01 September 2018 to 30 April 2019.

The ideal applicant will be someone who wishes to challenge him or herself in teaching and see if the fit is right for them in the future. Support will be given throughout the period by the team of teachers and technicians.

Candidates will need to have relevant experience of working with electronic and mechanical systems (robotics), modern materials and structures. The ability to support pupils in the creation of prototypes using a range of modern manufacturing processes (eg 3D Printing and CNC machining) will also be essential.

This position includes a generous benefits package, including a pension scheme. For full details on the above post and to apply please click here.

Only applications completed on the College website will be accepted.

Mathematics Teacher

Winchester College wishes to appoint an effective and inspiring teacher of Mathematics. The successful candidate, who will be a Mathematics graduate, will be required to teach at all levels and ages; he or she will be able to negotiate Pre-U Further Mathematics, MAT and STEP. He or she may be required to contribute to the numerous extra-curricular Mathematics activities and to our outreach programme.

The Mathematics Department consists of thirteen mainly full-time teachers. Several have research degrees in various disciplines -Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics and Music - and all find the department a stimulating and collegiate place in which to work and teach. Mathematics teaching at Winchester College is assertively and unashamedly traditional, and its teachers believe that learning in Mathematics should be enjoyable, memorable, rigorous and stimulating. The Mathematics Department enjoys strong links with the Science and Economics Departments; and one of its members is Mathematics Specialist to the school's Learning Centre (SEN). It has a flourishing and extensive outreach programme, and strong connections with local state primary, secondary schools and Winchester's Sixth Form College.
About 110 pupils in each of the lower and upper and lower sixth forms (there are approximately 140 pupils in each of these year groups) take Pre-U Mathematics; and of these nearly half also take Pre-U Further Mathematics. In summer 2017 about 70% of Pre-U Mathematics candidates achieved a Distinction grade; in Further Mathematics this figure was about 80%. The higher sets throughout the school participate in the various activities of the UKMT, with excellent results.
