Hidden amongst the trees, in the corner of Meads, and next to the Logie burn Itchen carrier, is the recently opened Cameron Bespolka Outdoor Classroom. This wonderful new learning area has been created in memory of Cameron (C, 2011 – 13) who tragically died far too young.
From an early age, Cameron was passionate about the world around him and his family is keen to ensure that outdoor learning is an important element of a Winchester education. This project has been entirely funded by the generosity of donors.
The classroom overlooks the river, and beyond it the landscape, which inspired Keats' ode 'To Autumn'. Current boys and future generations of Wykehamists will no doubt be as inspired by their environment and hopefully develop their own passion for the countryside.
This space is not just for teaching those subjects directly related to the great outdoors, but to enable pupils to learn, surrounded by nature, whether that's philosophy, literature or biology. The amphitheatre style seating caters for up to 30 people and the new pontoon encourages the boys to explore the river and the life within.
As well as being used by our pupils, it will also be available to the various visiting state school groups we welcome as part of our community programme.
